4 Ways to Help Your Student Stay Sharp During Spring Break

Spring break is right around the corner, so many of us are preparing to have our children home for a week while we juggle our regular work schedule or we’re preparing for a vacay. Regardless of the scenario, you’re in, it’s important to help your student stay sharp during the break.

While spring break isn’t as long as winter or summer break, I noticed that Laila forgets some of the new skills she’s learned in the classroom when she’s out. I hate seeing her fall behind even slightly, so I try to make sure she is stimulating her mind even while at home. Check out some of the tools/programs I use to help her stay on track.

Note: These tools and programs aren’t limited to break, I like to incorporate these in our weekly after-school routine as well.

Printable Worksheets

If you’re tracking what your child is working on in school then I highly recommend printing a few worksheets from each subject. There are a ton of free resources online where you can find worksheets for children K-12. Here are a few websites with free worksheets:

ABC Mouse/Adventure Academy

Developed by the same creator, ABC Mouse, and Adventure Academy are Laila’s favorite activities to do when she gets home from school. ABC Mouse is learning for children ages 2-8 while Adventure Academy is geared towards the 8-13 age range, but both are great online tools. See an overview of both below:

  • ABC Mouse: ABC Mouse is a platform that includes hundreds of games and interactive learning activities, each designed to be fun and educational at the same time.

  • Adventure Academy: Adventure Academy (the platform Laila uses) is a platform where your child can 'walk' around the ‘imaginary’ campus, explore classrooms, see other students (real and virtual), and receive tasks from 'instructors’. It adds a gaming concept to learning which is ideal for Laila.

Flashcards

Let’s take it back to the tool my mom used to keep us on track while on summer break, the good old flashcards. Flashcards are great for mathematics, spelling, color identification, shape identification, and more. There are probably flashcards for everything at this point. You can use flashcards to quiz your little one or play a game.

Tutoring Sessions

If you are going to be working while your child is on spring break, hiring a tutor may be a good option. You can have a tutor come to your house for a few hours to work on any outlined subject. Plus, tutors have professional experience teaching students, so that is a major bonus.
